Liz Seidel will be the first pianist to play in a series of fourconcerts located at Westminster Village. The free concert will highlight favorites from Baroque to Contemporary.  LizSeidel Biography: Liz Seidel enjoys a successful career as pianist, teacher andchamber musician. A native of Reading, PA, Dr. Seidel manages The SeidelStudio, a highly successful private piano studio in Muncie, IN. She has heldadjunct faculty positions at the Miami University (Ohio), University ofWisconsin (Superior), University of Minnesota (Duluth) and Ball StateUniversity. She has served on the board of the Indiana Music TeachersAssociation and was a member of the summer piano faculty at Blue Lake Fine ArtsCamp (Michigan) for thirteen years.  In 1999 Dr. Seidel was the recipient of aTeacher Enrichment Grant, awarded by the MTNA Foundation. She has served thriceas an adjudicator for Musicfest Northwest, a week-long festival for youngartists in Spokane (WA). Dr. Seidel has performed as a guest pianist for thePacific Rim Summer Chamber Music Festival, Ucluelet (British Columbia) and theSt. Petersburg College (Florida) Piano Concert Series. As a collaborativeartist she has performed with Carsten Svanberg, Gail Williams and Sherry Kloss –and is currently Collaborative Pianist in Residence for the Jascha HeifetzSymposium at Connecticut College.  Dr. Seidel’s students have wonregional/state honors, and have been accepted as performance majors to notableschools and summer workshops within the United States.  Dr. Seidel isfounder/artistic director of Pianoforte, Inc., a non-profit organizationdedicated to providing young musicians in East Central Indiana withopportunities in chamber music, festivals and guest master classes. Athena Gretchen Seojeong Nagel

Athena Nagel (14) was born in Muncie, Indiana. She ishomeschooled and is now in 9th grade. Athena loves to play classicalpiano and also to participate in Muncie Ballet, Inc. During summerof 2011, she attended the "Young Artist World Piano Festival" in St.Paul for her second year in a row, and she spent three weeks at the piano campat Interlochen in Michigan. While at Interlochen, Athena was chosen toplay the harpsichord with the intermediate Interlochen Symphony Orchestra, andthe ensemble performed a concerto grosso by Handel. In May of the sameyear, she won the local "Junior Festival" playoffs, and then in Juneshe won first place in her age category at the state level of the "JuniorFestival" competition. She also won first place in the local"Hoosier Auditions" competition, and went on to win anhonorable mention at the "Hoosier Auditions" state level. Athena'splaying has been heard on WBST radio several times over the last few years, aspart of the "Young Artist Showcase" series presented byPianoForte, Inc. She regularly plays on MTNA pre-college recitals hostedby Ball State, and on spring recitals coordinated by her principal pianoteacher, Liz Seidel. She has also been the piano/harpsichord player withthe Youth Symphony Orchestra of East Central Indiana for the last three years. Athenatakes supplemental piano lessons with Jean-Louise Hagenauer at IndianaUniversity.

Mrs. Gloria Griner

Mrs. Gloria Griner, retired professor of piano, music education andpiano for conductors at Ball State University, will be performing for theMuncie Symphony Orchestra as part of the Westminster Concert Series.

Mrs. Griner, a local pianist, is known for her long time dedication tothe arts within the Ball State Community. A founding board member of theMuncie Symphony Orchestra, Gloria has dedicated both her time and talents tothe symphony. Mrs. Griner is also an active member at the Ball State UniversityMuseum of Art as a sustaining member and past president of the Ball StateUniversity Art Alliance. Both Gloria and her husband Ned have been longtime supporters of the museum. Mrs. Griner has also developed asignificant part of the community engagement on behalf of the Museum of Art, asa former member of the Art Museum’s Benefactors Society. Mrs. Griner will perform works by Debussy, as well as a host of the worlds most beautifulclassical pieces. The concert will be a unique and beautiful experience,as Mrs. Griner shares a portion of her vast background from a spectrum ofvisual and musical artistry.

AUSTIN HUNTINGTON, studentof Richard Hirschl, made his solo orchestral debut at age 10 and hasperformed as guest soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony, South Bend Symphony,Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and LaPorte Symphony to name a few. Austin recentlymade his Orchestra Hall debut with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestraperforming the Sinfonia Concertante by Prokofiev. He will make his solo debutwith the Kalamazoo Symphony, the Northwest Symphony (Chicago), and the MuncieSymphony Orchestra this season. He has performed in Italy, France, Germany,throughout the United States, and celebrated his New York debut at CarnegieHall in 2009. He has been awarded numerous Grand and First Prize awards on theNational and International level. Austin has been selected to compete in the2012 Johansen International String Competition, to be held this March inWashington, D.C.

Austin was awarded the 2011Stulberg International String Competition Burdick-Thorne Gold Medal, andBach Award for the best performance of a Bach solo work. He was declaredthe 2009 National First Place Winner of the Music Teachers NationalAssociation Solo String Performance Competition held in Atlanta, Georgia.Austin was selected as one of six cellists representing the United Statesinvited to compete in the 2009 Rostropovich International Cello Competitionheld in Paris, France. Austin has performed in Masterclass for numerous masterclinicians, and has collaborated with such highly esteemed concert artists asMisha Amory, James Dunham, and Itzhak Perlman.

Austin has appeared on NPR's Fromthe Top on their 2011-2012 National Tour taped live at the Music Pier inOcean City, New Jersey, on stage for a large audience, and was broadcastnationally November 2011. He is the Principal Cellist of the award-winningChicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and Encore, CYSO's premiere performingensemble. During the summer Austin studies cello at the prestigious PerlmanMusic Program on Shelter Island, New York, and during the winter at the PerlmanMusic Program winter residency in Sarasota, Florida. He plays a cello made byFrancesco Ruggeri of Cremona, ca. 1690, and a fine cello bow made by EugeneSartory, ca. 1930. Austin is seventeen years old and a senior with HighHonors at Saint Joseph's High School in South Bend, Indiana.

Muncie Symphony Orchestra Hires New Executive Director

MUNCIE -- Muncie Symphony Orchestra's search for a new executive director is over.

The MSO board approved hiring Muncie resident Alena McKenzie at the Oct. 28 board meeting, board President Bob Darroca said.

Currently working part time at MSO, McKenzie will begin her new position full time on Jan. 1. McKenzie replaces Elissa McDonald, who left MSO in September. Her first order of business will be to make sure plans for the current season happen without a hitch.

After that, however, McKenzie won't change things until she gets the pulse of the community. Through surveys of the Ball State University community, season ticket holders and community members at-large, McKenzie wants to know what people want from MSO. She's not just talking about MSO performances either, but educational programs, venues and outreach programs. McKenzie is still working on the logistics of how to get the surveys done.

"Once I see where the gaps are, I will see where we can fill the gaps in," McKenzie said. "My challenge right now is trying to figure out the best way to reach the most people."

Her forethought is indicative of why McKenzie bumped past the competition. In addition, she had experience working for nonprofits and has strengths in organization and funding, Darroca said.

"She already had a plan in her head as far as how she was going to proceed ahead," Darroca said. "Even before she even knew she had the job she had already researched the Muncie Symphony Orchestra and what we needed. She was extremely organized even from the get-go. She had put in a lot of work prior to our even hiring her."

McKenzie is insight research office coordinator at the Center for Media Design at Ball State and has a master's degree in executive development from Ba ll State. She studied music as a child and her mother was a piano teacher. She is MSO's 11th executive director since it was founded in 1949.

"I felt like music was always a big part of my life," McKenzie said. "I thought that my administrative skills could help organize a little bit better, the functioning of the organization and have a different perspective. I thought I would give it a shot and see what happens."

The Muncie Symphony Orchestra Holiday Concert, Dec 3 4 pm, Emens

The Muncie Symphony Orchestra will present the annual Fisher-Shafer Holiday Concert in Emens Auditorium on December 3 at 4 pm.

The concert, a long-time Muncie tradition will include music by the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, special vocal performances from students in area schools and a thrilling surprise production that will delight concertgoers.

The Holiday Concert is a sampling of everything the Muncie Symphony Orchestra has to offer, including classical repertoire and traditional holiday favorites.

Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture” op. 96 will be showcased as a fanfare of instruments spotlighted by distinct melodic representations from brass, wind and strings to a lyrical presentation of horn and cello.

Other classical pieces will include Haydn’s “Symphony no. 26” and Liszt’s “Hungarian Fantasy,” performed by the 2011 Muncie Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition senior division winner Louisa Steup.

A sparkling presentation of the “Finnegan Sing-Along” will be sung by local Muncie Community School children.

Holiday favorites such as “Lightsongs: A Chanukah Melody,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “Jingle Bells Forever” will ring in the holiday season as concertgoers will be invited to sing along as part of the 63-year-old Holiday Concert tradition.

As concert patrons enter the lobby of Emens, a pre-concert benefit will be the opportunity to take advantage of free family portraits, courtesy of Murray’s Jewelers. Portraits will be made before the concert, and then offered online as a free image download.

An additional concert feature will be the continued support of the Second Harvest Food Bank Holiday Concert Food Drive. Concertgoers are asked to bring any non-perishable food items or make monetary donations in the lobby of Emens Auditorium before the concert.

Old National Bank has partnered with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra for the food collection and a special “donate-a-dollar” fundraiser. From now until December 3, all Old National Bank branches are accepting food and monetary donations. Each dollar donated to Second Harvest Food Bank can feed six people a meal this holiday season.

*Peter Breiner’s award winning “Beatles Concerto Grosso IV” Baroque style includes the familiar tunes “Here Comes the Sun,” “Michelle, “Goodnight,” and “Carry That Load” transcribed for string ensemble.

English composer Benjamin Britten’s “Simple Symphony” is a work for a string orchestra written as a dedication to his childhood music teacher. This four movement piece is considered one of his first masterpieces as an adult composer. The most popular second movement “The Playful Pizzicato,” has a spirited melody and charming invention.

Paul McCartney songs “When I’m Sixty-Four,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Let It Be” feature in an original composition by Jody Nagel.

Music Forever

In music composition, the notes begin in the composer’s heart and end on the musical staff. A rhythm is born, carrying the melody to far reaching places and hopefully into the hearts of others.

The beauty of music is that it may be shared from one friend to another, from teacher to student, or generation to generation.

Music is a gift that is forever received.

David and Mary Jane Sursa have given the Muncie community this extraordinary gift—music forever.

In 1949, the Sursas were asked to be a part of a musical legacy: the composition of a symphony orchestra.

The Sursa family began a 63 year investment that included commitments such as hiring a babysitter for the musicians, baking cookies, selling tickets, taking tickets at the concerts, planning concerts, and managing the orchestra’s finances. After years of hard work, the Sursas and other founders of the symphony were well into this successful composition of a musical orchestra.

The Sursa’s legacy began with commitment and dedication. Just as musical compositions have a peak, so did the Sursa’s legacy of support. In 2004, David and Mary Jane Sursa were named benefactors of Sursa Hall, the cornerstone of the music instruction building at Ball State University.

In the early days of construction of the performance hall, it was expected that it would eventually house a pipe organ, but there was no donor and no specific plan for an instrument.

The Sursas decided that they would be benefactors for a pipe organ so that University musicians would have a place to practice and perform organ on campus for the first time in the University’s history.

Mary Jane Sursa recently recalled the conversation she had with her husband:

We had been there for the groundbreaking of Sursa Hall before there were plans for an organ. We took tours regularly. David’s mind was always working. He wanted to be sure there was an organ in the hall. One morning David said, “I was thinking about this last night. I’ve got it figured out. We’re going to do the organ.” So we had a meeting: David, Ann (Sursa Carney), and I, Bob Kvam, and Kirby Koriath. There was still time to make the necessary alterations to the south side of the building, to decide on an organ builder, and to design an instrument. It was David’s vision that brought all this about. He had a great vision.

You see the students at Ball State. When they practiced their organ music and had recitals, they used to go to local churches. Now they can do all that on campus. And the community benefits from the instrument as well.

Young Artist Competition Winner, Arthur Shou, keeps on winning!

The Muncie Symphony Orchestra plays an important role in offering young musicians competition and performance opportunities. Arthur Shou is one of many talented pianist who competed in the 2010 Young Artist Competition. He won the Senior Division. Arthur has been recognized in Indiana and beyond as an aspiring, up and coming musician. You may remember Arthur Shou's wonderful performance at this season's Fisher Shaffer Concert. Arthur won the piano division of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition this January.

We are very fortunate to have a part in his early career and blessed to know Arthur and his family. Arthur is the older brother of Oliver Shou who won this MSO's Junior Division Young Artist Competition in January. You will find Oliver's bio in a previous post. Oliver is performing on the program for the MSO Young Peoples Concert April 19th. More on the YPC here.

Arthur Shou is 17 and a junior at Carmel High School in Indiana. He started piano at the age of six with Dr. Keli Xu. In 2007, he joined the Indiana University Young Pianists Program as a student of Dr. Karen Taylor of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In addition to his passion for the piano, he also studies cello with Mr. Ron Noles and is the principal cellist in the Carmel High School Symphony Orchestra

His gifts have earned him numerous awards and performances, including the recent performance with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. In recent years, he has won the 3^rd place in 2009 Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Maurer Young Artists Concerto Competition and 1^st place in 2010 Carmel Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and 2010 Muncie Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. In the past, he participated and won numerous competitions, including 1^st prizes in the Young Hoosier Pianist Competition (junior division) in 2005 and the 2^nd in 2006 (senior division), 1^st place in Music Teacher National Association State Round (junior division) in 2005, and Indiana Music Teacher Association in 2001 (Early Elementary, District), 2003 (Elementary, District, and State), 2005 (Middle School, District and State), and 2006 (High School Junior, District and State), and was a finalist in Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Maurer Young Artists Competition in 2004. He has attended the IU Summer Piano Academy four times, where he was selected to perform in master classes for Prof. Karen Shaw, Jonathan Bliss, and Andre Watts. Other highlights include performances at Ball State University, Goshen College, Anderson University, and the Indiana Historical Society.

Rialzo II is back after the inaugural fun and successful event last spring!

Held at the Horizon Center, this is the place to be at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21st. Rialzo II is a fun, elegant, classy evening of excellent food, dancing and entertainment by Kool and the Gang, and shopping, sort of. Both silent and live auctions raise money for arts partners Muncie Civic Theater, Cornerstone Center for the Arts and Muncie Symphony Orchestra. Wander among the silent auction items, find something you love, and start the fun of bidding!

Animals in Music

April 19th over 2000 mostly 4th and 5th grade students will fill Emens Auditorium for the Muncie Symphony Orchestra's Young Peoples Concert.

The theme is ANIMALS.

Carnival of the Animals composed by Camille Saint Saens in 1886 is among the selections on the program. You might enjoy a preview, but not all the animals will be heard at the Young Peoples Concert. Pterodactyls and brontosauruses
Sang ghostly prehistoric choruses,
Amid the mastodonic wassail
I caught the eye of one small fossil,
“Cheer up sad world,” he said and winked,
“It’s kind of fun to be extinct.”

THE SWAN

The swan can swim while sitting down,
For pure conceit he takes the crown,
He looks in the mirror over and ovea,
And claims to have never heard of Pavlova.

THE GRAND FINALE

Now we’ve reached the grand finale,
On an animalie, carnivalie,
Noises new to sea and land,
Issue from the skillful band,
All the strings contort their features,
Imitating crawly creatures,
All the brasses look like mumps
From blowing umpah, umpah, umps,
In outdoing Barnum and Bailey, and Ringling,
Saint Saens has done a miraculous thingling.

Ballet of the unhatched Chickens by Mussorgsky (Pictures at an Exhibition)

When Mussorgsky wrote "Pictures at an Exhibition" in 1874 he was inspired by paintings and sketches by the painter Viktor Hartmann. Hartmann drew 17 costume and set designs for the ballet Trilby, four of which are extant. This is the sketch that inspired Mussorgsky's

Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks.

Trilby was first performed at the Bolshoi in 1871, with choreography by Marius Petipa and music by Julius Gerber, both celebrities in their day. The plot was loosely based on a short story by the French author Charles Nodier titled "Trilby, or the Elf of the Argyle", published in 1822 (there is no relation to DuMaurier's ballet Trilby, which appeared in 1895). Petipa moved the setting from Scotland to Switzerland, and made other substantive changes as well. The title was changed to "Trilby, the Demon of the Hearth". The ballet featured children from the Russian Imperial Ballet School dressed variously as birds, butterflies and, as in this sketch, chicks still in their eggs. source

Elusively Crazy!

Elusively Crazy, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra season finale, is elusive. Well, you won't see it all this season. The April 30th concert has been cancelled. I know, it is very disappointing. Disappointing for the audience, for the musicians, for the MSO- everyone the MSO touches. We just don't have the funds to pay for the concert. Here is why.

Did you know each concert can cost as much as $35,000? Where does the money go?

Rental of venue -Emens Auditorium and the staff
Shuttle from the parking lot to Emens
Rental of music - MSO does not own most of the music we play. Purchasing music is more expensive than renting. Occasionally a piece can be borrowed from a nearby orchestra, and that helps with the cost of music. MSO lends music as well.
Fees for the Artistic Director, Guest Artist(s), musicians, ~ Personnel Manager - she hires the musicians for each concert, and ~ Music Librarian - he is responsible for finding the music, sending it out before the concert so the bowings can be marked-so all the string players play the piece in the same way, getting the music to the musicians so they know the music when the rehearsals start, collecting the music and returning to the owner.

Multiply this by 5 regular season concerts, Young Peoples Concert, two Rattanovy concerts, Festival on the Green, Picnic & Pops concert, and as many as 50 programs for schools and underserved and at risk audiences with Music on the Move and a program at the Muncie Children's Museum.

Where the money goes is only half of the story. Funding is critical to the success of the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. As any organization, MSO lives on a budget planned months ahead of the fiscal year. MSO applies for grants from organizations such as the Indiana Arts Commission. The IAC funding covers about 3% of the budget. Season ticket sales and admissions another 23%. Contributions from corporations and sponsorships about 29%, folks like you about 22%, Foundation grants roughly 5%, and income from endowments, interest tops out at 13% and other income from touring, Rattanovy series, and other events is just under 6%. Planning for concerts, guest artists, events and educational programs depends upon meeting the funding projections. Projections that are based on historical data. Most of the time it works well. This year, however, funding did not meet the projections, which resulted in canceling Elusively Crazy.

We know the economy has been rough for a few years, and conditions within the community are challenging. We hope this will improve soon. You can help in several ways. The MSO is offering to refund ticket holders for the April 30th concert. If you desire a refund, please call the MSO office by April 30. Should you prefer to donate the cost of the tickets, we would appreciate it greatly. Please let us know so that we may provide you with a non-profit tax donation letter. The MSO depends upon individual contributions from people like you. Does that sound like a PBS public service announcement? It's true that many non-profits need funding. Reaching Out With Music

The Muncie Symphony Orchestra has many interests. Educating the public is a very high priority. Every year the MSO has a Young Peoples Concert for all the 4th and 5th grade students from the local city and county schools. More about that in another post!

Music on the Move is another outreach program the MSO offers to the community. Quartets or quintets visit by request and present cirruculum-based, interactive short concerts to students. Thus far this year, the Graduate String Quartet has 19 scheduled performances. You might be surprised to learn requests also come from outside traditional educational institutions. The youngest audience was ages 3-6, and the oldest audience was 60 - 90 years old.

The theme this season is History of the Dance.

Talent of the Ages

Season Ticket holders discovered tickets to two additional performances in their packet this year for the first time: Young Peoples Concert (Rescheduled for April 19) and the MSO Young Artist Competition. Those who took advantage of Young Artist Competition had the pleasure of hearing very talented and dedicated young people compete on January 15, 2011.

Young musicians competed in two divisions: junior (middle school students) and senior (high school students). They came from all over the State of Indiana and performed on piano, cello, violin, flute, marimba, or clarinet. All the students received a Certificate of Participation.

Junior Division Winner ~ Oliver Shou

Oliver Shou, 14, is in the 8th grade in Carmel Middle School. He was born in Huston, Texas and has three brothers, Arthur (who won the senior division 2010), Edward and Phillip. Oliver loved listening to classical music as a baby and began studying piano at the age of five with Dr. Keli Xu. Over the hears, he has worked hard to prepare himself for a future music career. His passion for music and piano has grown fast in the last two years. Beginning 2007 he attends Piano Academy, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University as a student of Dr. Karen Taylor. He was the winner of the Hoosier Auditions at district and state levels (IMTA Piano Competition, Middle School level) in 2010. Recently, he won honorable mention in Murray State University/Paducah Symphony Orchestra piano concerto competition. In the past, Oliver competed in the Early Elementary and Elementary levels in the IMTA Piano Competition, Indiana State Fair Piano Competition, and the Wold Piano competition in Cincinnati, and won various awards. Throughout the years he has performed various recitals, including at Wabash College, Indiana Historical Society, Indiana State Fair, and Conner Prairie. In addition to playing piano, Oliver also studies viola with Mrs. Kathy Hershberger and is a principal violist in the Carmel Middle School Symphony Orchestra. In his free time, Oliver is passionate about Lego blocks. He enjoys building castles, ships, cars, robots, and helicopters. He likes to hang out with his brothers and play basketball, football, and swim. He wishes to become a musician and an engineer.

Oliver Shou will be performing on the program of the Young People's Concert on April 19th, 2011. The concert is in Emens Auditorium at 9:30 a.m. Please call the MSO office (765-285-5531) to reserve a seat.

Senior Division Winner ~ Louisa Steup

Louisa Steup, 15, lives in West Lafayette, Indiana. At the age of three, she began playing piano and currently studies with Luke Norell at Indiana University in Bloomington. She is won the St. Clout Symphony Concerto Competition (MN) in 2008 and the Young Artist Piano Camp Chamber Music Competition in 2009. She also was a performer at the YAPC Honors recital in 2009 and 2010. Also in 2010 Louisa was a finalist in the YAPC Concerto Competition. She was a finalist at the Schubert Club Competition (MN) in 2008 and 2010. Louisa was the winner of the Indiana tate MTNA competition in November 2009. She was runner-up at the Division Competition, held in Wisconsin, in 2010. Louisa enjoys fencing and drawing in her spare time. Louisa will perform at a future date.
